First Responder Screening and Diagnostics

Cancer and heart disease remain significant health issues for firefighters and emergency responders because they face potentially toxic exposure to gases, chemicals, and smoke every day in their line of duty. Additionally, things like obesity, metabolic syndrome, smoking, alcohol use, and stress can add to the health problems that many in the firefighting community face.

According to research from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute for Occupational, Safety, and Health (NIOSH), cancer causes approximately  61% of deaths among  U.S. firefighters. Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer and a 14% higher risk of dying from cancer than the general U.S. population.

UNITED DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES LLC  journey working with first responders started after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, when 343 brave firefighters lost their lives to the toxins they were exposed to on 9/11. Thousands are still battling cancer as an aftermath of that tragedy. Medical researchers have found that since 9/11, over 3,000 of the 16,000 World Trade Center firefighters and EMS workers have developed one form of cancer or another, including but not limited to cancers of the skin, thyroid, prostate, and colon. Early screening and detection could help diagnose cancer at early stages allowing for more treatment and recovery options.

Our diagnostic health programs represent best practices for detecting actionable pathologies, cardiovascular disease, and occupational cancer among the first responders. The ultrasound-based tests that UDS team deploys onsite in union halls and fire stations are a gold standard diagnostic tool to help early diagnosis and treatment.

UDS also offers NFPA 1582 physicals for firefighters to assist in maintaining a healthy workforce. These occupational comprehensive medical examinations include:

Hearing Test | Eyesight Test | Pulmonary Function Test | Cardio Pulmonary Assessment | Blood and laboratory test  Chest X-ray With Radiologist Review | Lung X-ray with radiologist review | Stress Test | Wellness Exam completed by annual board-certified physician.

Success Stories

“We found, what I believe is one of the best onsite health clinics out there in United diagnostic Servies. They understand firefighters and the health screenings they need. United Diagnostic Sevices has saved so many of my brothers and sisters health lives. I truly feel like I owe them so much”.

Jack Eltman

Recording Secretary / Office Manager Philadelphia firefighters and Paramedics Union

“I did this screening in July when they came to Fairfax. They found a Aortic Aneurysm and a blockage of my Aortic Valve. Since the results I have been going through numerous tests, multiple doctors, etc. I will undergo a major surgery to have this repaired in two weeks and a long recovery. Just prior to this screening I had a Eco Stress Test performed by Virginia Heart and my County Physical and this wasn’t detected.  Had this gone undetected, it would have killed me, it was just a matter of time before it happened. Surgeon says that this can be fixed and I can go on to live a normal life”.
